Judith designed this unique pattern in 1987 it was one of the first designs that she made. It represents Viking Runes or you could call it Viking Graffiti! Runes are found in the Neolithic tomb of Maeshowe on the Orkney mainland. Dont worry translated it simply says " Orkney" in Runic writing !!
This waistcoat with unique runic buttons and front pockets are painstakingly handmade by one of Judiths Island knitters from soft Scottish lambswool , it has ribbed welts and front band . This lichen colourway with dark peaty browns, grassy green and a lichen colour reflects the textures and colours of Orkneys the lichens we see growing on cottage roofs and stone built dykes that you see surrounding the smaller farm holdings.
Judith uses a fully fashioned method for making her collection and each piece is shaped by hand on a small domestic knitting machine then sewn together and finished by hand. When you buy a garment from Judith you are truly buying an item that has been painstakingly made in a home and not mass manufactured.
We do carry some Orkney knitwear stock but if the piece you choose is not in stock when you order we will contact you and make one up especially for you which may take up to 5 weeks.
